Coffee was introduced to Peru during the 18th century, however didn't become a prominent exporter of the crop until much later. It is now one of the top producers of Arabica in the world. This coffee was grown by 413 farmers who are members of the Juan Santos Atahualpa Industrial Agroecological Cooperative in Chanchamayo, an area that is famous for high-quality coffees.

The group was established on October 16, 2011, with 20 pioneering partners in Santo Domingo, Kokari, 35 km from the Pichanaki district. It was founded due to the lack of sufficient supporting services in the local coffee supply chain. As a cooperative, it was established for the benefit of the partners and the collective development of the organization.

The cooperative has a number of development and sustainability goals and initiatives that it maintains. They include to improve their production methods and processing techniques, to better market their coffee, and to maintain the standards required of them by the many certifications they possess, including Fairtrade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and Utz.
